Q25 of 53 Page 1

Account for the following:
(i) Primary amines (R-NH2) have higher boiling point than tertiary amines (R3N)
(ii) Aniline does not undergo Friedel – Crafts reaction.
(iii)
(CH3)2NH is more basic than (CH3)3N in an aqueous solution.

Give the structures of A, B and C in the following reactions:

(i) Primary amines form inter molecular H – bonds, but tertiary amines don’t form H – bonds. So, primary amines have higher boiling points than the tertiary amines.

(ii) Aniline forms salt with Lewis acid AlCl3 and the Lewis acid AlCl3 is necessary for the Friedel crafts reaction to take place. So, aniline does not undergo Friedel crafts reactions.

(iii) (CH3)2NH is more basic than (CH3)3N in an aqueous solution. because of the combined effect of hydration and inductive effect (+I effect).
