Draw the structures of the following :

(i) XeO3


(ii) H2SO4


(i) XeO3 is a tetrahedral molecule with sp3 hybridisation. It has a trigonal pyramidal structure.



Note:


A trick to find out hybridisation.


Z = Number of valence electrons on central atom + (number of monovalent groups attached) - (charge with sign).


Then we need to find out


If =2, then hybridisation is sp


If =3, then hybridisation is sp2


If =4, then hybridisation is sp3 and so on.


For XeO3, number of valence electrons on Xe is 8 (noble gas), 0 monovalent groups attached (as O is bivalent) and the molecule is electrically neutral.


So, Z =8 and If =4, so hybridisation is sp3.


(ii) Structure of H2SO4 is as shown:



H2SO4 shows tetrahedral geometry with sp3 hybridisation. We can check the hybridisation from the above mentioned trick if we put the valence electrons of S as 6 and monovalent atoms as 2 (2 –OH groups).
