Account for the following:

XeF2 is linear molecule without a bend.

XeF2 is a linear molecule and is formed by sp3d hybridization of xenon atom in its first excited state. Among the five sp3d hybrid orbitals formed this way, three contain a pair of electrons each and remain non-bonding. The remaining two sp3d hybrid orbitals are singly occupied and overlap with the half-filled orbitals of two fluorine atom to form a linear XeF2 molecule.

The shape of the molecule is linear because the arrangement is trigonal bipyramidal and all the lone pairs occupy the equatorial positions of the molecule. Also due to the linear shape the repulsion between the lone pair and bond pair of electrons is minimum and hence the XeF2 is a linear molecule. The structure of the molecule is as follows:
