A voltaic cell is set up at 25C with the following half cell;

Al / Al3+ (0.001 M) and Ni /Ni2+ (0.50 M)


Calculate the cell voltage. [ E Ni2+/Ni = - 0.25V, EAl3+/Al = -1.66V]

Given:

E Ni2+/Ni = - 0.25V


EAl3+/Al = -1.66V


Concentration of [Ni+2] = 0.50 M


Concentration of [Al+3] = 0.001 M


Using Nernst’s Equation:




= -0.25 – (0.02955× 0.30103)


= -0.25 – 0.0089


= -0.2589V




= -1.66 – (0.0197× 3)


= -1.66 – 0.0591


= -1.7191 V


Ecell = -0.259 – (-1.7191)


= -0.259 + 1.7191


= 1.46 V


Therefore the cell voltage is 1.46 V.
