Why does leather get hardened after tanning?

Leather which generally made up of animal hides is colloidal in nature mainly consisting of the positively charged particles and when leather is soaked in tannin which mainly consists of negatively charged particles, mutual coagulation of the positive and negative charge take making the leather harder.
