Discuss briefly the character sketch of Peter Van Daan.

Peter van Daan was a shy, awkward and quiet teenage boy of sixteen. He was sensible, thoughtful, sensitive and observant, unlike his loud and brash parents. Reclusive and reticent, he was unlike other boys and Anne initially misjudged him to be hypochondriac, hypersensitive and lazy. Peter used to be sullen and difficult because he had no friends. He was introvert and could not reach out to anyone, especially his parents.
On the other hand, Peter turned out to be tolerant, peace-loving, and extremely easy going. Gradually, he began confiding in Anne. Peter also made an effort to express his innermost self to Anne. In the process, he was able to also draw out Anne from her troubled self. Peter’s uncommunicative nature found companionship with Anne. Together they survived the trying times. Their friendship is nothing about romance but plain mutual fondness for each other. It grew during hardship times that were inflicted with war.
