Q84 of 128 Page 224

Simplify

(2.5m + 1.5q)2 + (2.5m - 1.5q)2

The given expression is

(2.5m + 1.5q)2 + (2.5m - 1.5q)2

We have

(2.5m + 1.5q)2 = (2.5m)2 + 2(2.5m)(1.5q) + (1.5q)2

(2.5m - 1.5q)2 = (2.5m)2-2(2.5m)(1.5q) + (1.5q)2

Therefore,

(2.5m + 1.5q)2 + (2.5m - 1.5q)2

= (2.5m)2 + 2(2.5m)(1.5q) + (1.5q)2 + (2.5m)2-2(2.5m)(1.5q) + (1.5q)2

= 12.50m2 + 4.50q2
