The followings features describes small-scale manufacturing in Palampur:

• There were less than 50 people who were engaged in the manufacturing sector as a non-farming activity in the village.

• These manufacturing activities used very simple production methods, unlike big manufacturing units which usually involves very big machines and tools.

• Manufacturing units were established at homes or in fields unlike big buildings of big-scale industries.

• They were operated by family labours only. No outside labour was hired for manufacturing.

One example is of Mishrilal’s sugar cane manufacturing unit. He bought a sugar cane crushing machine run on electricity and bought sugarcane from farmers of the village. He processed it into jaggery and sold jaggery to traders.
