Mumbai is the developed metropolitan city of India. Many cotton textile mills were established in Mumbai. Some of the factors responsible for this are as follows:

a. Mumbai had well-developed transport facilities.

b. Cheap and abundant labour was available.

c. Since it was the financial centre of India, it was easy to generate the capital needed to start the mill.

d. Moreover, Mumbai was very close to the cotton-producing regions of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

e. Cotton was available in Mumbai itself as raw cotton was transported to England through Mumbai port.

Thus, the city of Mumbai had its first cotton mill in the year 1854.
