‘‘Every January after the harvest season ‘Jonbeel Mela’ takes place in Jagiroad, 35 kilometres away from Guwahati and it is possibly the only fair in India, where ‘barter system’ is still alive. A big market is organised during this fair and people from various tribes and communities exchange their products.’’

In light of the above paragraph, justify the values of ‘barter system’ in the lives of the tribal communities.

Exchange of goods against goods is known as Barter System. The values of the barter system in the lives of the tribal community can be understood from the following:


1. The barter system promotes mutual trust and co-operation among the people.


2. People can understand the importance of sharing.


3. People can develop a sense of mutual respect and care.


4. It indirectly promoted goodwill.


5. People can understand the importance of living in a better relationship with one another.


6. Barter system promotes the welfare and wellbeing of the tribal communities.


7. The tribals get to know the value of their products.


8. This system helps the tribals to understand their strengths and weaknesses.


Thus, the barter system indirectly helps the tribals to know the world better and to be more civilized.
