Q17 of 26 Page 1

The three microbes are listed below. Name the product produced by each one of them and mention their use.

(a) Aspergillus niger

(b) Trichoderma polysporum

(c) Monascus purpureus

(a) Aspergillus niger – is a fungus, they produce citric acid, apart from this, they also produce oxalic acid, gallic acid and glucomic acid. Acetic acid is used as a chemical reagent for the production of chemical compounds. The largest single use of acetic acid is in the production of vinyl acetate monomer. Oxalic acid is used as bleach on marble sculptures, wood, iron, etc.

(b) Trichoderma polysporum – is a fungus, they produce bioactive molecule called cyclosporin A it has antifungal, anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. Cyclosporin A is useful as an immunosuppressive agent in organ-transplant patients.

(c) Monascus purpureus – is yeast, they produce statins. Statins is blood-cholesterol lowering agents. It acts by competitively inhibiting the enzyme responsible for synthesis of cholesterol.
