Colonel Pennycuick.


Colonel Pennycuick was a British Army Engineer and a civil servant, who made efforts to provide waters to the land of Madras by constructing dam for irrigation. He made efforts by selling his own property in London in order to fund the project.

He decided to divert the west-flowing Periyar river to the east for the irrigation purpose. With his efforts, he was able to construct the Mullai Periyar dam on Vaigai river. The project was finally completed in 1895.
