Discuss the economic impact of British Rule in India.

The following economic impacts were seen-

a. Agrarian conditions- The British introduces various revenue systems in order to gain maximum amount of revenue from the Indian agriculture system. In the process of earning maximum amount of revenue, they exploited the Indian peasants to a great extent.

b. Land Revenue- the land tax which was one of the main sources of revenue was collected forcibly and in case if inability to pay the revenue the peasants were even forced to mortgage or sell their lands as a result of which the peasants lose their pieces of lands and become landless labours.

c. Irrigation- the Indian peasants were either dependent on rain or the canals and wells for providing water to the fields but the British were reluctant to pay any attention for the betterment of the irrigation system, as a result of which many a times crop failures were seen due to paucity of water on the fields.

d. Indentured labours- the peasants when lost their lands, were compelled to work for the British, but their condition as labours were even worse because the wage, they get was nominal.

e. Famines- Due to often failures in crop production and frequent cropping of commercial crops various parts of the country were facing the grim situation of famines and millions died every year in these famines due to starvation.
