Assignment
Explore the impact of colonialism in British Burma.
Colonization on Burma by the British led to an adverse impact on the country as they completely destroyed the monarchical system of the country. They also abolished the monkhood of Buddhist monks which led to hurting the religious sentiments of common masses. The people tried to resist British rule but their resistance was brutally crushed by the modern and well-organised army of the British. The British completely took over the administrative and judicial system of the country.
The economy of Burma was worst hit when the British colonized this small country. Forests were cut in order to increase the land under cultivation of rice. The peasants were compelled to work for the British planters. Lands of peasants were confiscated when they were unable to pay the undue taxes.
Though, the transportation system in Burma grew at a rapid rate yet the natives couldn’t benefit from it as the whole system belonged to the British and they used it in order to transport resources from one place to another. So, we can say that the colonization of the land of Burma hit the country badly and the poor peasants were worst hit by the process of colonization. Even now the effect can be seen as Burma is a small and under developing country and is facing the financial crisis due to the adversities they faced during the British rule.
