Q9 of 49 Page 1

How many cells are present in the pollen grains at the time of their release from anther? Name the cells.

• Microsporogenesis is the formation of microspores and further forms the pollen grains.

• Anther is the fertile portion of the stamen which is tetrasportangiate type and each anther lobe has two microsporangia (pollen sac)

• The primary sporogenous cells may directly function as the microspore mother cell (MMS) and undergo meiotic division to form microspore tetrads.

• Each cell of sporogenous tissue is capable of giving rise to the microspore tetrad so inside each microsporangium thousands of microspore or pollen grains are formed.

• When pollen grain is mature it contains two cells: that is vegetative which is bigger and a smaller one known as generative cell.

• In most of the angiosperms families about 65% the pollen grain is shed at this 2-celled stage (One vegetative and one generative cell.)

In rest of the species pollen grains may be released during the 3-celled stage (one vegetative cell and two male gametes.)
