These genes are isolated from a bacterium, Bacillus thuringiensis. The cry genes encode a protein, But toxin. This protein exists as inactive protoxins. When an insect in gest the inactive toxin, it is converted into an active form. The activated toxin binds to the surface of midgut epithelial cells and create pores that cause death of the insect.
