Unambiguous, universal and degenerate are some of the terms used for the genetic code. Explain the salient features of each one of them.

Genetic code is called Unambiguous or Specific as one codon codes for only one amino acid.

It is said to Universal as a codon codes for same amino acid in all organisms for e.g. from bacteria to humans UUU codes for Phenylalanine (phe).


As there are 64 sets of triplets of codon coding for 20 amino acids and so some amino acids are coded by more than one codon. For e.g. Phenylalanine is coded by UUU, UUC and Arginine is coded by CGU, CGA, CGG, AGA, AGG.
