Q17 of 46 Page 1

Write the principle of the following:

(a) Hydraulic Washing

(b) Chromatography

(c) Froth- floatation process

(a) Hydraulic Washing is based on the difference in specific gravities of minerals and impurities. In this, powdered ore is washed in a stream of running water so that lighter impurities are washed away leaving behind the mineral.

(b) Chromatography is based on the principle that dfferent components of a mixture are differently adsorbed on an adsorbent.

(c) Froth- floatation process is used for the concentration of sulphide ores based on difference in wettability of mineral and impurities. Ore particles are preferentially wetted by oil while impurities are by water.
