Why are medicines more effective in colloidal state?

What is the difference between an emulsion and a gel?


There are many factors that account for the colloidal nature of solids.


(i) Colloids have more surface area for absorption and reaction and thus the medicine can cause its effect efficiently.


(ii) Bodily functions are prominent and are relatively on the colloidal state, which makes medicines in colloidal state compatible with the purpose and transportation.


(iii) Nano-particles seem to have a more surface area but most of the biological processes involving molecules and enzymes are on the scale of colloids, thus they can interact and have desired effect.


(iv) Besides that, blood is a colloid so the transportation through the body is done primarily without any hindrance or loss of medicine during its transport.

Emulsion


(i) A liq-liq suspension with one immiscible in the other.


(ii) Dispersed phase & dispersion medium is liquid.


(iii) e.g. paints, milk, enzymes, etc.


Gel


(i) A solid-liquid or a semi-solid colloid.


(ii) Dispersed phase is liquid and medium is solid.


(iii) e.g. Butter, polyionic polymers, etc.
