State Raoult’s law for solution containing volatile components. Write two characteristics of the solution which obeys Raoult’s law at all concentrations.

Raoult’s Law states that, ‘In a mixture of volatile liquids, the partial pressure of each component in the solution is the product of its vapour pressure at pure state and its mole fraction in the solution.’

Mathematically,

pi partial pressure of ith component

xi mole fraction of ith component

pi vapour pressure of pure component

For a binary solution containing volatile components, and according to Dalton’s law,

Ideal solution follows Raoult’s law, and should have following characteristics:

(i) Enthalpy of mixing should be zero,

(ii) Volume change of mixing should be zero,

(iii) The pressure variation within the solution should vary linearly with concentration.

The linear variation would be
