Q19 of 46 Page 1

Write the structures of monomers used for getting the following polymers:

(i) Nylon-6,6

(ii) Glyptal

(iii) Buna-S

i) Is a homopolymer or copolymer? Give reason.

(ii) Write the monomers of the following polymer:

(iii) What is the role of sulphur in vulcanisation of rubber?

(i) Nylon-6,6

Preparation of nylon-6,6 is intermolecular condensation between hexamytlene-1,6-diamine and adipic acid.

(ii) Glyptal

The monomers for Glyptal are phthalic acid and ethylene glycol

(iii) Buna-S

The formation of Buna – S is as follows:

Thus the monomers for Buna S are buta-1,3-diene and styrene.

OR

(i) Given compounds is a homopolymer as it has only one type of molecular bond between the linking monomers. This classification can be identified by knowing the type of bond between atoms and the presence of different functional groups and different type of molecules. As the given compound does not have any different kind of molecule it is a homopolymer.

(ii) As the given compound is a co-omopolymer, the monomers for the given polymer are melamine and formaldehyde.

(iii) Soft rubber is intolerant to heat and is soft for industrial use, thus vulcanisation is necessary to improve the quality and other physical properties.

Sulphur forms crosslinking chains which increases the rigidity of rubber. This makes rubber stronger and flexible and more resistant to thermal fluctuations.
