Q12 of 55 Page 1

Write chemical equations when:

(i) methyl chloride is treated with AgNO2.

(ii) bromo benzene is treated with CH3Cl in presence of anhydrous AlCl3.

Methyl chloride(CH3Cl) on reacting with AgNO2 gives Nitro-methane and silver chloride(white precipitate).

(ii) This is known as Friedel craft’s alkylation reaction.

+ CH3Cl + AlCl3

This reaction occurs in presence of a strong Lewis acid like AlCl3 . AlCl3 ionises CH3Cl as CH3+ and AlCl4- . This carbocation is attracted towards the benzene ring.
