State the functions of the following:

(a) Synapse


(b) Association neuron


(c) Medullary sheath


(d) Medulla oblongata


(e) Cerebellum


(f) Cerebrospinal fluid.

(a) The function of the synapse is to transfer electric signals (information) from one cell to another.


(b) The association neurons in the spinal cord function as of inhibitory control. They also interconnect other cells with one another.


(c) The medullary sheath increases the speed at which impulses propagate along the myelinated fiber. Along unmyelinated fibers, impulses continuously move as waves, but, in myelinated fibers, they "hop" or propagate by saltatory conduction.


(d) The medulla oblongata helps regulate functions of internal organs like breathing, heart, and blood vessel function, digestion, sneezing and swallowing. This part of the brain is a center for respiration and circulation.


(e) The cerebellum coordinates voluntary movements such as posture, coordination, and speech, resulting in smooth and balanced muscular activity.


(f) The cerebrospinal fluid cushions the brain within the skull and serve as a shock absorber for the central nervous system, cerebrospinal fluid also circulates nutrients and chemicals filtered from the blood and removes waste products from the brain
