Q19 of 56 Page 1

A team of Indian researches went to Antarctica to study the ozone layer. They confirmed the presence of largest ozone hole over Antarctica and was just short of 27 million sq. km. After few days of their return, one of the scientist developed rushes, burning sensation and other skin problems which the doctor have confirmed as skin cancer.

(a) What may be the cause of cancer just after return from Antarctica?

(b) What do we learn from this incident?

(c) Raghav, a student of your school organizes a poster-making competition on the topic ‘save ozone’. What moral value is shown by Raghav? What other initiatives will you suggest in this regard?

(a) Since there is a big hole over Antarctica due to which the scientist were exposed to harmul UV- radiations and suffered from cancer.

(b) We learnt the importance of Ozone layer from this incident. Since it absorbs harmful UV radiations and protects us from Sun’s harmful rays and various skin diseases including cancer. The use of chloro Fluoro carbons (CFCs) have resulted in the depletion of Ozone layer. Since, it is being used as a coolant in refrigerators which results in increase in the temperature of the Stratosphere. CFCs rise up to the stratosphere layer where the molecules are broken up by the UV-rays and results in depletion of Ozone layer by damaging it. If Ozone layer depletion continuities, it may lead to skin cancer, cataracts, damage in immune system etc. It can also lead to affect the rainfall, aquatic food chain and much more.

(c) It shows that Raghav has a concern towards the environment and he is worried about Ozone depletion effects . So, he is awarding people to know the effects of the Ozone hole.

The initiatives which can be taken as a student are as follows:

1. Playing drama, skits to aware about the harmful effects of use of CFCs.

2. Organization of Debates and competitions for the awareness

3. Writing slogan competitions
