A compound ‘X’ in its aqueous solution form, is added to acetic acid taken in a test tube. Then a gas is evolved. This gas turns lime water milky. Name the compound ‘X’ and the gas evolved. Also write the equation for the reaction.

The compound ‘X’ is Sodium carbonate whose formula is Na2CO3.

The chemical equation can be written as follows:


CH3COOH + NaHCO3 CH3COONa + H2O + CO2


The gas evolved from above reaction is carbon dioxide which turns lime water milky.
