Why did Valli stand up the seat? What did she see then?

Valli decided to stand up her seat as her view of the outside scenery was being blocked by a canvas blind that covered the lower part of her window. So, she stood up to look over the canvas blind.

When Valli stood up her seat, she saw the upcoming narrow road which had a canal on one side. Beyond this canal was a large extent of land covered with palm trees, grassland, distant mountains and the unending blue sky. And the other side of this narrow road was swept by acres of green fields and a deep ditch.
