What distinguished the dominance of the Congress Party in India from the one-party dominance in other countries ? Explain.

Though there are many other nations that experienced dominance of one party but dominance of congress was different from rest part of the world.

1. In the rest of the cases the dominance of one party was ensured by compromising democracy.


2. some countries like China, Cuba and Syria the constitution permits only a single party to rule the country.


3. Some others like Myanmar, Belarus, Egypt, and Eritrea are effectively one-party states due to legal and military measures.


The most prominent difference was that the dominance of congress happened under democratic conditions. Many parties contested elections in conditions of free and fair elections and yet the Congress managed to win election after election.

The smaller states in the alliances used the link to the superpowers for their own purposes. They got the promise of protection, weapons and economic aid against their local rivals, mostly regional neighbors with whom they had rivalries. The alliance systems led by the two superpowers, therefore, threatened to divide the entire world into two camps. This division happened first in Europe. Most countries of Western Europe sided with the US and those of Eastern Europe joined the Soviet camp. That is why, these were also called the ‘western’ and the ‘eastern’ alliances.
