224 can be written as 16 × 14


224 = (-16) × (-14)


Also using the identity, x2 – y2 = (x + y)(x – y)


a2 – b2 = (a + b)(a - b) = (-16) × (-14)


On equate the factors, as


a + b = -16 and (a – b) = -14 and solving these two equations, we get,


a = -15 and b = -1
