Let us solve the following simultaneous equations in two variables by the method of substitution.


Given … (1)


And … (2)


Expressing x of equation (1) in terms of y,








… (3)


Substituting (3) in (2),






⇒ 4 (2y – 3) = 7 (7y – 31)


⇒ 8y – 12 = 49y - 217


⇒ 217 – 12 = 49y – 8y


⇒ 205 = 41y


∴ y = 5


Substituting y value in (3),





∴ x = 8


∴ By solving, we get x = 8 and y = 5.
