Q4 of 102 Page 44

Solve the following equations by the method of elimination (by substitution)

8x + 5y = 9

3x + 2y = 4

We have

8x + 5y = 9 …(i)

3x + 2y = 4 …(ii)

From equation (i),

8x + 5y = 9

8x = 9 – 5y

…(iii)

Substituting the value of x from equation (iii) in equation (ii), we get

27 – 15y + 16y = 32

(16y – 15y) = 32 – 27

y = 5

Putting this value of y in equation (iii), we get

x = -2

Thus, we get the solution as x = -2 and y = 5.
