Q17 of 102 Page 49

The numerator of any fraction is 4 less than the denominator. If 2 is subtracted From the numerator and 1 is added to denominator then denominator becomes 8 times the numerator. Find the fraction.

Let numerator be x and denominator be x + 4

When 2 is subtracted from numerator it becomes x - 2

When 1 is added to the denominator it becomes x + 5

According to the problem

8(x - 2) = x + 5

⇒ 8x - 16 = x + 5

⇒ 7x = 21

⇒ x = 3

So the fraction is
