Q24 of 24 Page 236

A box with a lid is made of 2cm thick wood. Its external dimensions are 25cm × 18cm × 15cm. How many cm3 of rice can be placed in it? Also, find the volume of wood used in the box.

Given,

Dimensions of box

Length (L) = 25 cm

Breadth (B) = 18 cm

Height (H) = 15 cm

Thickness (t) = 2cm

Internal Dimensions of box

l = L -2t = 25 -4 = 21 cm

b = B -2t = 18 -4 = 14 cm

h = H -2t = 15 -4 = 11 cm

Outer Volume of the box = L × B × H

= 25 × 18 × 15

= 6750 cm3

inner Volume of box = l × b × h

= 21 × 14 × 11

= 3234 cm3

Amount of rice that can be stored is 3234 cm3

Volume of wood used = Outer volume – inner volume

= 6750 – 3234

= 3516cm3

So, 3234 cm3 of rice can be stored and wood used is 3516 cm3
