Q6 of 47 Page 1

Mention any two reasons for the disintegration of the Soviet Union.

The Soviet Union disintegrated into Russia, Ukraine and Belarus in 1991. this is due to the following reasons:

a) There was an ECONOMIC STAGNATION, fuelled by heavy military spending and decreasing levels of productivity. Infrastructure and technology were in a dismal state, and there was a shortage of consumer goods. This led to dissatisfaction and disillusionment with the system, and people began to express their concerns openly.

b) There was a POLITICAL STAGNATION, caused by a lack of accountability of the government. Rampant corruption, Kafkaesque bureaucracy and failure to correct the administrative mistakes led to an increase in dissatisfaction with the government. Hence, the government lost its popular backing.
