Explain the main recommendation of the Mandal Commission.

The Mandal Commission mainly recommended the system of reservation. They suggested reservation for the socially and educationally backward classes of the society. This system came into practice in 1979 under the governance of the Janata Party Government when Morarji Desai was the Prime Minister. Since then it became mandatory to identify the social and educational backward sections of the society and reserve 27% for these classes of people. They recommended steps for such reservations that would include 27% job that would be offered on the basis of merit to those who did not qualify promotion at each level, age benefits and a roster system. They also wanted this to be applied in the public sector.
