The hardliners of the communist party encouraged a coup that took place in 1991. They opposed the old-style rule of the Communist Party after getting an idea of what freedom meant. This opposition was led by Boris Yeltsin who emerged as a hero and also won the election the Russian Republic. At this stage the power of the Soviet Union started to shift to the republics especially in the sovereign states of the Europeanised part of the Soviet Union. While the Central Asian republics chose to remain with Soviet system. In December 1991, the Soviet Union was disbanded by the major republics of the USSR including Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. At this stage, capitalism and democracy became the bases for the republics that came after the Soviet republics.

The non-aligned countries sometimes played a role in reducing Cold War conflicts and averting situations of crisis. One of the key leaders of the NAM, Jawaharlal Nehru played a major role as a mediator between the two Korean countries. Similarly during the Congo crisis, the role of a mediator was played by the UN-Secretary General. The super powers in the world had realised that war would cause only destruction and that all measures should be taken to avoid it. They decided to behave more responsibly while deciding on international affairs. In spite of the restraint, the rivalries and suspicions among the countries could not be removed which led them to keep themselves prepared for war.
