Why does the insecticidal protein produced by Bacillus thuringiensis not kill the bacterium, but kills the cotton bollworm? Explain.

The insecticidal protein produced by Bacillus thuringiensis is the Bt toxin. It does not kill the bacterium, but kills the cotton bollworm because in the bacterium, the Bt toxin protein exists as an inactive protoxins. It only becomes active due to alkaline pH of the gut of cotton bollworm.
