Q23 of 44 Page 1

Waste Disposal and Waste Management poses a major problem in present times. Generation of garbage and its disposal is a major threat and consequently leads to severe environmental issues. The problem is not with biodegradable and recycled wastes. We realise that the need is to reduce non-biodegradable wastes.

(a) Why is there a great concern of managing non-biodegradable waste in comparison to biodegradable waste ? Explain.

(b) As a member of eco club of your school, suggest any two ways that you will discuss with your fellow members to organise for a “Zero garbage day” once in a month in the school.

(a)

Biodegradable wastes are wastes that decompose or degrade naturally into simpler components.

Non-biodegradable wastes are wastes that cannot be decomposed easily into simpler forms.

There is a greater concern of managing non-biodegradable waste in comparison to biodegradable hosts because non-biodegradable wastes produce toxic products which are released into the environment leading to pollution.

(b)

Two ways that are likely to be discussed with fellow members to organize for a 'Zero Garbage Day once in a month in the school would include:

a) Avoiding usage of products like plastics, tin cans which are non-biodegradable and also ensuring their proper disposal whenever one comes across such products in the school's vicinity.

b) Ensuring proper recycling of items like papers by organizing various activities like 'Best out of Waste' competitions where the items can be reused to create new items.
