Find the area of the shaded region in Figure 11, where ABCD is a square of side 28 cm.

Given: Side of square = a = 28 cm


Thus, area of the square = a2 = (28)2 = 784 cm2


Radius of the circle = 28/4 = 7 cm


Area of one circle = πr2


= × 49


= 154cm2


Now, area of four such circles = 4 × 154


= 616 cm2


Area of the shaded region = Area of square – Area of four circles


= 784 – 616 = 168 cm2
