A lady went to a bank with Rs. 1.00.000. She asked the cashier to give her Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 currency notes in return. She got 175 currency notes in all. Find the number of each kind of currency notes.

Let 500 notes be x

Let 1000 notes be y


According to the question


x + y = 175⋯(i)


According to the question


500x + 1000y = 100000⋯(ii)


500(x + 2y) = 100000


x + 2y = 20


subtrate (i)-(ii)


x + y-x-2y = 175-200


y = 25


Putting the value of y in (i)


x + y = 175


x = 175-25


x = 150
