Twice the number of pants = 2x

From the given condition,

y = 2x – 2 (I)

i.e. number of skirts are less than 2 twice the number of pants.

y = 4x – 4 (II)

i.e. number of skirts are 4 less than four times the number of pants.

Subtracting eq. I from II, we get

2x = 2

⇒ x = 1

So number of pants purchased = 1 and number of skirts = 0
