Solve for x: (CBSE 2016)

The equation can be rewritten as

Squaring both side

2x + 9 = (13 - x)2

2x + 9 = 169 + x2 - 26x

x2 - 28x + 160

x2 - 20x - 8x + 160 = 0

x(x - 20) - 8(x - 20) = 0

(x - 8)(x - 20) = 0

x = 8 or x = 20

But x = 20 is not possible because it does not satisfy the original equation.

So, x = 8
