Solve for x: (CBSE 2014)

2x2 + ax – a2 = 0

In factorization, we write the middle term of the quadratic equation either as a sum of two numbers or difference of two numbers such that the equation can be factorized.



⇒ 2x2 + 2ax – ax – a2 = 0


⇒ 2x(x + a) – a(x + a) = 0


⇒ (2x – a)(x + a) = 0


⇒ x = a/2, -a
