Social movements aim at achieving a specific goal and people gather and organise movements, rallies and processions in order to achieve their goal. Generally, social movements demand changes in state policy or practice.


The following are some of the features of social movements.


a. There is collective action by the group of people belonging to some organisation or group.


b. Social movements usually have a leader.


c. There is a specific structure. The structure explains how members of the group decide and implement their decisions.


d. We can see shared ideologies and objectives among the members participating in the movement.


Thus a social movement requires sustained collective action.
