Q15 of 25 Page 1

There are wide regional variations in the age structure in India. Elaborate on the reasons for the said phenomena.

The following are the reasons for the wide regional variations in the age structure in India:

a. Favourable age-structure can be seen in states like Kerala where the literacy rate is high. Low fertility levels are seen in these states where the people are educated.

b. The rate of development in all the states of the country is not equal. The death rate may be high. Similarly, there can be a tendency of high birth rate to compensate for the increased rate of death. Therefore, an unfavourable age structure is seen.

c. Even in this twenty-first century, some states show a high preference for male children, thus raising the fertility levels in the desire for male kids.

We can see the state of Kerala showing a favourable age-structure like that of a developed nation. On the other hand, Uttar Pradesh has a high rate of the youth population.
