Q16 of 25 Page 1

Using the isolation-integration debate, give your opinion on whether tribes should be treated as fundamentally different from the caste peasant society or as a part of it.

The tribes should be considered as same as Hindus and should not be isolated.

The Debate:

Isolationist side:

This side put forth that the tribals should be secluded as they need protection from the Hindu and Christian missionaries, traders and money lenders.

Integration Side:

This side put forth that the tribals should be treated just like the backward class of Hindus are treated as they belong to the Hindu community.

1. The history of Central and Western India shows that the Rajput kingdoms emerged from the division among the Adivasi groups.

2. Adivasis traded in forest produce, elephants and salts.

3. They raided the people living in plains.

4. The capitalist economy brought about a change exploiting forest resources. They recruited cheap labour. Thus these tribes were able to maintain a relationship with the other sections of the society.

But these people can mingle or integrate only by sacrificing their interests.
