“The very term ‘disabled’ is significant because it draws attention to the fact that public perception of the ‘disabled’ needs to be questioned”. State the common features central to the public perception of ‘disability’ all over the world.

‘Disabled’ refers to a person who has some impairment physically or mentally. The common features central to the public perception of ‘disability’ all over the world are as follows:


a. The ‘Disabled’ person is often seen as a victim and is always perceived that he/she is in need of help.


b. ‘Disabled’ persons cannot survive individually.


c. The family of the disabled persons is isolated from society.


d. The person’s impairment is seen as the sole reason for the problems that he/she faces.


e. People refuse to think that the ‘Disabled’ can also be ‘differently abled’.


f. His/her disability is understood only as a biological problem.


Thus, disabled persons are always seen as special persons who is misunderstood to be a burden to society.
