State what is apomixis. Comment on its significance. How can it be commercially used?

Apomixis is a form of asexual reproduction that mimics sexual reproduction.


A few flowering plants like Asteraceae and grasses have evolved this mechanism to produce seeds without fertilization.


It can be used commercially in the following ways –


• Hybrid varieties of seeds can be produced in much lesser time.


• It prevents loss of characteristics in hybrid varieties.


• It is a cost-effective way of producing seeds.
