Explain the significance of satellite DNA in DNA fingerprinting technique.

Satellite DNA – The repetitive DNA are separated from bulk genomic DNA as different peaks during density gradient centrifugation. The bulk DNA forms a major peak and the other small peaks are referred to as satellite DNA. These generally do not code for any proteins.


Significance of satellite DNA in DNA fingerprinting –


• These are inherited from parents to offsprings. They can be used for paternity testing.


• They show high degree of polymorphism which forms the basis of DNA fingerprinting.


• Different tissues in the body show the same degree of polymorphism and thus are used as an identification tool in the forensic science.
