Describe any three potential applications of genetically modified plants.

Three potential applications of genetically modified plants –

a) Pest-resistant Plants – Plants are genetically modified to resist against pests and insects. For example, Bt cotton produces proteins that kill insects like lepidopterans, beetles, flies, etc.


b) Disease-Resistant Plants – Genetically modified plants are resistant to disease caused by bacteria, fungus or viruses. Example – Pusa swarnim is resistant to disease named white rust.


c) Nutrient enhancement – Genetically modified plants contain more nutrients. For example – vitamin ‘A’ enriched rice.
