Q21 of 43 Page 1

Why do tribes who live in high altitude of Himalayas experience discomfort in respiration? How do they get adapted to survive in such a situation?

The high altitudes of Himalayas have low atmospheric pressure and body does not get enough oxygen, resulting in altitude sickness. And this leads to nausea, fatigue and heart palpitations and thereby discomfort in respiration.

The body gets acclimatised to such situation gradually. The body starts producing more red blood cells which decreases the binding capacity of haemoglobin thereby increasing breathing rate.

The increased production of RBC helps in increased transportation of gases, this is necessary as there is less oxygen in high altitudes.

So tribes living in these areas get physiological adaptation using which the body compensates low oxygen availability by increasing RBC cell production.
